Company Roster
The Captain
Known by no other name, the Captain was the undisputed commanding officer of the Black Company. Under his command, through discipline, deception, and execution, the Black Company earned a reputation as the best soldiers in the Empire – the ones who would do the best job. As a result, the Company gained tremendous prestige, being granted field command over Imperial regulars, and being assigned to all of the most critical and difficult assignments.
Croaker, the Company Annalist when our story opens, described the Captain as one of the Company's more enigmatic figures; a man who seemed to have successfully severed all connection with his past. Through all of Croaker's annals, he managed to discover little about the Captain beyond his direct mannerisms; a bear-like demeanor and way of movement, and a level of determination that seemed to match the Black Company's long trek through history.
The Lieutenant
The man known only as the Lieutenant was the second in command of the Black Company. In his youth he sailed as a cabin boy, where he learned ships. Later he received an education in military engineering, specifically siege weapons. By the time he joined the Black Company he was already an experienced soldier and tactician.
Divisions
The Black Company is broken down into five broad catergories of service:
- The Lions are the heavy troops, both cavalry and infantry. They take the front row in pitched battle and the top dog position in the company heirarchy. At the beginning of this story there are about 150 Lions.
- The Wolves are the scouts and rangers, experts in negotiating wildreness and finding resources. At the beginning of this story there are about 35 Wolves.
- The Ravens are the intelligence division, combining the roles of military police and investigators. At the beginning of this story there are about 15 Ravens.
- The Spiders are the trap setters and defusers. At the beginning of this story there are about 8 Spiders.
- The Serpents are the infiltrators and spies. No body ever knows how many Serpents there are.
