In the spring of the year 542 AD, the Captain signed a contract with the Syndic of Beryl, one of the Jewel cities on the south western shores of the Sea of Torments. It wasn't a real contract. Not to fight. It was an agreement to maintain control in the city and put down rebellions. Most of the old hands quit on the spot rather than become police officers. But maybe the Captain figured that. New recruits make a whole lot less than seasoned veterans. And our time in the city gave us an opportunity to train up the newbies.
